On Saturday July 2nd, The I Project had it's first event, a free screening of Beyonce's 'Lemonade' followed by an inter-generational panel of Black women. We had a full house for both the screening and panel, which included a diverse crowd of all ages. After the film, the panel which included Jamillia Young, Karlita Williams, Carris Adams, Dr. Erica Bauer, and Robin Rone, discussed the impact of the film on the community. The conversation ranged from differences in satisfaction with representation in the film, to differences in opinion on what Beyonce should do with her platform.
For many, it was refreshing to hear Black women speak on 'Lemonade', rather than white-washed media what has critiqued it from its release. The event allowed for the voices of Black women to be heard, on a topic that directly effects them.
